Beaches Near Athens

Athens is not the first city that comes to mind for beach days, but it should be. The Athens Riviera stretches south from Glyfada to Cape Sounion, with a string of organised and free beaches along the coast. Further out, Schinias near Marathon has the longest sandy beach in Attica.

Then there's Lake Vouliagmeni -- a warm, mineral-rich lake fed by underground thermal springs, surrounded by cliffs, and open for swimming year-round. All of these are reachable by local bus or tram from central Athens.
