Travel writer, based in Athens since 2015

Day Trips From Athens is written by Dave Briggs, a British travel writer who has been based in Athens since 2015.

Before settling in Greece, I spent the best part of 25 years moving around -- backpacking through South America, sailing across the Mediterranean, cycling from Alaska to Argentina and then from England to South Africa, and visiting roughly 100 countries along the way. Athens turned out to be the place that stuck. It helps that the city is one of the best-connected starting points in the Mediterranean. Within two or three hours you can reach world-class archaeological sites, car-free islands, mountain trails, and beaches that have no business being this close to a capital of five million people.

This site exists because most "day trips from Athens" content is written by people who visited once and googled the rest. Every guide here is based on trips I've taken repeatedly, using the same KTEL buses, ferries, and suburban trains that you will. Where a destination is disappointing, the guide says so. Where an organised tour is a waste of money compared to going independently, the guide says that too.

I also run Greek Ferry Travel, a dedicated resource for Greek island hopping and ferry routes, and have co-authored guidebooks on the Greek islands. You can find more of my work at Dave's Travel Pages, where I've been writing about travel since 2005.
